Life isn't easy for Sydney Bristow. A graduate student in English Literature, she also works full-time at a bank. It's tough enough to juggle school and a job, but it's even more so when your bank job is just a cover...
In between writing papers on F. Scott Fitzgerald and spending time with her friends, Agent Sydney Bristow is also on a mission to save the world. Recruited her freshman year of college, Syd works for SD-6, a black ops division of the CIA, or so she thinks.
As we are introduced to Syd, her life and her friends, she becomes engaged to long-time beau, Danny, who is a pediatrician. Troubled by the secrecy surrounding her double-life, Syd decides to confess the true nature of her job to the man she loves. In doing so, she unleashes a series of events that change her life forever.
SD-6 learns that she has told Danny of her affiliation with them, and they have him assassinated to ensure he doesn't tell anyone else of their existence. A devastated Sydney angrily confronts her boss at SD-6, Arvin Sloane, who takes her into custody for violating SD-6 protocol. After determining she is not a risk, he lets her leave; however, she refuses to come back to her job as an agent, and he sends his security forces to bring her in.
Her father, whom she's always believed had a job selling airplane parts, saves Sydney. As it turns out, Jack Bristow is also an agent for SD-6, and it is then that she learns the truth. SD-6 is not a black ops division of the CIA, but is instead one of a dozen cells in a large terrorist network. She's been working for the enemy she thought she was fighting.
Refusing his assistance, angry with him for the years of neglect and indifference he's shown her, she sets out on her own. SD-6 wants something only she can get, so she obtains it for them, thereby removing any doubt on their part that she is a loyal agent.
Determined to bring SD-6 to its knees and avenge Danny's death, Syd turns herself into the real CIA and becomes a double agent inside SD-6. In doing so, she learns that her father is also a double agent for the CIA.
As they work together, Syd begins to uncover truth after truth, calling into the question everything she's ever believed about her own life, the death of her beloved Mother and the man she thought she knew as her father.
